Intolerance and Bigotry win again

The voters in Maine have spoken.
Gays are just not quite as good as the rest of us.
They don't deserve the things the rest of us can count on.
Not because of what they do, but because of who they love.

Its a shame that people of "faith" see fit to demand that we all accept their world view. Based on their beliefs.

They will tell you, without any basis except their beliefs, that allowing gays to marry will destroy the social or moral fabic of our country. They can't point to any new or accelerated social or moral decay in any of the countryies that have accepted gay marriage, but they believe it so it must be true.

Some, more on the fringe, will try to claim some link between homosexuality and pedophilia, again without a shred of evidence, but that is their belief and we all ahve to live by their beliefs.

This is an issue of civil rights. Pure and Simple. People are being denied access to the civil contract purely and simply because of who they love. And no one who supports this discrimination can come up with one defendable reason for their discrimination. All they have is their beliefs that homosexuality is some how bad or gross or an abomination. And they demand the right to impose their beliefs on the rest of us.

I would be outraged if I wasn't so depressed by it all.

Apparently, you consider anyone who disagrees with you to be a bigot.

That is an ad hominem attack. Surely you know that that is neither valid nor convincing?

Anon,

Not everyone who disagrees with me is a bigot. But what is a bigot. "A bigot is a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices."

And that describes many of those who oppose gay marriage.

I point out that the people who believe that gay marriage is somehow destructive to society as a whole have no evidence to support their belief. Gay marriage is legal now in a couple of US states and a number of countries and there is no evidence that allowing gay marriage in those places has hurt anybody.

I did point out that those who believe that gay marriage leads to pedophilia also have no evidence to support their beliefs.

And based purely on their beliefs, that have no basis in fact or evidence, they would deny to gay couples the same rights available to the rest of us.

Just because you can spell ad hominem doesn't mean that you actually know what it means.

I disagree with the notion that people who are against gay marriage are bigots, unless we apply the same label to people who are against any activity that some people engage in (polygamy, pederasty, etc.). There are some issues where society generally feels it needs to draw the line.

Having said that, I am not against gay marriage (I should say that I'm only for it in that I'm not against it; if gay people want to get married, it doesn't hurt me any). I believe that within a few years, gay people will be able to be married in most, if not all, of the 50 states.

But I think it would happen much more quickly and with less rancor if the pro-gay marriage people adopted tactics like those used in the American Civil Rights movement, rather than the Russian Revolution (yes, I am exaggerating; not as much as you might think, however). In the wake of Prop 8's passage (I voted against it) in California, I was disgusted to see all the disruptions at local churches as angry people stormed them. Mormons were a popular target.

Curiously, although black churches and Islamic mosques were also for Prop 8, nobody busted in to disrupt a service. I guess that's because the protesters principles only allow them to cause trouble where they're not likely to get their asses kicked.
